“TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM” (TIC)
David Horvath and Denise Columbus are ready again for raising Rainbow Trout from eggs provided by the Pa Fish & Boat Commission. This project has received all the needed funds from special donations from Facebook followers for the special in classroom equipment purchase in 2025 and additional funds from “Tubmill Trout Club Unlimited” to maintain equipment as we move into subsequent years. Mr. David Horvath with Ms. Denise Columbus are our volunteer teachers and project caretakers. Laurel Valley Elementary School 4th graders are excited to have this 50 gallon aquarium in Mr. Horvath’s classroom where trout eggs, supplied by the Pa Fish and Boat Commission, will be hatched and grown for stocking in May 2026 into Shannon Creek or Tubmill Creek. A “Trout Unlimited” grant purchased the special chiller unit which will keep circulating cold water for trout survival. Water quality is being monitored and maintained by Mr. Horvath and 4th grade student participants. Mr. Horvath plans to include this project into different subject areas of teaching. Available to him are outside speakers from the Pa Fish & Boat Commission & The Western Pa Conservancy and a great deal of “outdoor related” learning materials. Good luck with this program Dave! T.T.C.U. will assist with stocking the fingerling trout in late May.
